From our President
Berlin-Brandenburg, Brandenburg-Berlin, or Prussia???
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| If and when the states of Brandenburg and Berlin merge, will the newly created state assume the historic name of Prussia? According to a short article that appeared in the March 2, 2002 edition of The Economist at least one politician thinks it is a possibility. Brandenburg and especially Berlin continue to struggle to improve their economic situation. Despite these pressures and the rejection by voters in a 1996 referendum on merging the two states, politicians on both sides are pressing ahead with plans to merge by the end of this decade. Recent opinion polls show that voters are now in favor of merging, but would they accept the name Prussia? | Alwin Ziel, Brandenburg's social-affairs minister, suggested the possibility and started a firestorm of debate. Opponents of the idea are appalled that anyone could even seriously consider such an idea based on Prussia's history, particularly in the 20th century. On the other hand, proponents say that Prussia stood for many noble virtues that should not be forgotten. For now it appears that the debate will continue. It has raised strong feelings within the German people. One could suspect that such emotions exist within the peoples sharing their borders with Germany as well. |
| Schülerkongress took place on March 2, on the beautifully white campus of the University of Kansas. Due to a late season snowstorm only a few schools were able to travel to the event, but over 100 students still participated. All the events were able to proceed as planned and the students had a wonderful time. Beautiful medals were awarded to the highest scorers, students "purchased" items from the Tante Emma Laden with their SK Euros, and this year's T-Shirts were outstanding! Many, many thanks to Bill Keel for agreeing to host this event, to the members of the SK Committee - Meagan Meneley, Chris Hanks, and Jenny Banks. Thanks also to Phyllis Farrar for organizing the Bergwanderer and running the Game |
Room, Bill Keel for organizing the spelling materials that Nan Bergen attached to him via e-mail, Chuck Thorpe for coming in from Manhattan to do the Culture Quiz, and all the teachers and judges who stepped in to help whenever help was needed! Special kudos to Merle Schlabaugh from Newton and Yvonna Krekel and her students from Buhler. They foresaw the impending doom and came to the area on Friday to spend the night so that they could participate on Saturday! Thanks again to everyone who attended and helped to make this event possible. We hope to see more people next year! |
| Anyone, who has had job, address, phone, e-mail changes, etc., please contact our membership chair, Jenny Banks, so that she can keep an accurate updated list of all German instructors in Kansas. | Also, if you know of any colleagues who have had changes, she would appreciate getting any information! Contact Jenny or see her contact information below. Thanks for your help! |
| Deutsches Wochenende 2002 is fast approaching. This year's event will take place in September at Bethel College. The theme for DW 2002 will be centered around Switzerland. | Be on the lookout for more information to arrive soon in a mailbox near you! |

Senior Delana Perry, a second-year German student at Seaman High School, was awarded the $1,500 Blanche Bryden Scholarship for International Studies by the Topeka Community Foundation in December. Delana will use the award to participate in a four-week AATG German Summer-Study Program for High School Students in Germany this coming summer. Congratulations to an outstanding student! Congratulations to Anke Wells on being chosen by her peers to become one of two Seaman High School Teachers of the Year for 2002-03. She was also promoted to Chairperson of the Foreign language Department at Seaman High School last fall. Congratulations to Cynthia Appl for being selected to chair the newly merged Foreign Language and English Department at Baker University. The new department will be called the Department of Language and Literature. Congratulations to Brandon Weckbaugh of Topeka West. His excellent results on the National German Exam led him to be selected for the AATG/PAD trip prize this summer! |
Many thanks and best wishes to Ingeborg
Teasley as prepares to start a new chapter in her life this summer!
Ingeborg Teasley Abilene High School |
| Congratulations to Cynthia Appl and Nan Bergen for being selected to participate in the TraiNDaF (Transatlantisches interkulturelles Nachwuchsförderungsprogramm Deutsch als Fremdsprache) Program this year. The major goal of the TraiNDaF program is to develop a strong leadership cadre of younger teachers who after a period of professional development will be able to provide leadership in their region. | Nan and Cynthia attended their first meeting in Washington, D.C. from April 11-14. This summer Cynthia will be attending a Goethe Instuit Seminar that discusses Jewish Life in Berlin. The Goethe Instuit Seminar Nan plans to attend will focus on Youth Literature. A final meeting for all TraiNDaF participants is planned for Salt Lake City during the AATG Conference. |
